LITERACY POLICY (Information for Parents)
Good literacy skills are essential for pupils to cope with the demands of the school curriculum. Literate pupils are able to spell, read, write and speak with fluency. In order to achieve this it is important that teachers, parents and pupils work together.
Teachers will: • Promote all areas of literacy • Teach with literacy objectives in mind • Display key words in curriculum areas • Supply ample dictionaries • Correct pupils’ work by adhering to the school’s marking policy
Pupils should: • Always carry a reading book, especially for tutor time and Year 7 and 8 English lessons • Use the personal spelling section in study planners • Learn spellings using the look-say-cover-write-check method • Carry and use a dictionary • Use a suitable handwriting pen • Use the Resources Centre and computer rooms for research
Parents should: • Hear pupils read and encourage the value of reading books • Have a dictionary for home use • Consider buying spelling games such as Scrabble, Lexicon and Boggle for Christmas and birthday presents • Ensure homework tasks are completed to a high standard
At Springfield we provide literacy support and enrichment opportunities for pupils of all abilities. These include:
• Book Zone • Able Child Project • Public Speaking competitions • Portsmouth Book Awards • South Downs Poetry Competition
