Today wasn’t an ordinary day at Springfield School. Our task as the photographers was to take pictures of the year groups doing different activities during Technology Day. We took the morning to capture interesting moments and after that we learnt about generating and editing them from a professional photographer that came into school. We really enjoyed our day and showed off our good work on the Technology Day board which we designed at the end. As well as this, we learnt a lot about photography, about different techniques and shot positions for example, which is going to be useful for our course next year in GCSE. |

The year sevens were given three main tasks to do through out the day, The Egg Safety Test, Habitats and Shelters and Air Trike Challenge. The Egg Challenge had been set up by the Young Engineers. The pupils were given forty five minutes to complete their task. They had to put together a safety vehicle for an egg. They were given a choice of materials to create their vehicle and they had to make good use of it. The pupils were happy with this task and seemed to be making great progress. The Young Engineers were teaching them about all forms of engineering, ‘Our purpose is to inspire young people to recognise the importance and excitement of a career in engineering.’ Quote from Armel, a young engineer. The Habitats and Shelters seemed very interesting, their task was to create a sustainable, shelter that must be large enough for their whole team of four to theoretically sleep in. The visitor, Ben Frost, had come from Architecture Workshops and was happy to speak about the task. First the pupils were asked to make Tetrahedrons from sticks and elastic bands; they then found how to create a banana trust, from the same materials. Their last task was to make a human sized tent-like structure from sticks that would be durable in a dessert. The visitor was teaching them about Environmental requirements. The last activity we observed was air trike, this activity had actually been especially planned by Mr Elliott, he and Miss Crisp had made all of the parts for the task. It was one of the only new activities in the day as it had replaced last years air boat challenge and was actually taking place with both year sevens and year eights. The pupils all seemed to be really enjoying the activity and we spoke to Thomas Guy, 7N, about what he thought of it, he said "I have really benefitted from the activity and really enjoyed it and I would gladly do it again." The pupils were given an hour to make their trikes and then ten minutes to test them, we were lucky enough to see them being tested. Many seemed to be successful with the exception of a few breakages. |

One group of sporty Year 9 Pupils who have chosen P.E. as their option next year were heading off to Portsmouth University to gain knowledge about technology used in P.E. This is what Sam Spencer of 9F had to say: “Today I am going to Portsmouth University to discover technology used in sport. I’m looking forward to it quite a lot. I think it’s going to be great fun.” |
