Year 7 were split up into groups so that they could easily do the following activities; Maths Roadshow, Bridge Building and Airboat Challenge. In the Maths Roadshow the pupils had to solve maths related puzzles. Including a domino roadmap where you match up both ends of the domino with the one drawn on the sheet. The pupils had to build bridges in the other activity strong enough to hold a toy car. The last activity was the airboat challenge where they got to make there own boats with only brief instructions given. This boat was then tested in a pool against other boats made by different pupils.

Year 8 have been split up into groups to try and solve an investigation. This was a forensic science experience where they tried to solve who killed the school caretaker.  The activities they did were fingerprinting and footwear printing, examining hair and blood samples and they got to use all of these in a crime scene at the end. They all really enjoyed the day and learnt quite a lot about crimes.

On Technology Day Year Nine had many groups.  Some have recorded their own CD, others took part in “Ready steady cook”.  Another group made logos for Shakespeare’s play “Romeo and Juliet”. One group had Textiles and were asked to produce a summer item.  Others were given wood already cut, to make a bird house.

An Interview with Mrs. Kilgallon, Technology College Manager

We asked Mrs Kilgallon why the annual Technology Day is so important. This is a summary of her reply.

Springfield was awarded Technology College status in 2002. This gave us extra money to spend on specialist equipment like the laser cutter and set up the ICT satellite suites. Pupils now have easier access to design and make various products.

The annual Technology College Day reminds the pupils that this would not be possible without the extra funding and enables us to offer a wide variety of experiences that we cannot provide in normal lesson times. It also gives us an opportunity to work with local businesses that come in to lead some of the activities.

The majority of pupils always tell me that they enjoy this ‘different’ day and ask for it to be repeated the following year.”

The impressions that we gathered from other pupils also tell us that most of them really enjoy Technology College Day.
