Music Technology

The task of the Music group is to create a piece of music for a C.D. recording. The benefits of this task are that all the musicians taking part will learn how to use the recording studio and to work with one another. They told us that some of the people they are working with they never would have thought of working with before and that made them realise that you need to co-operate to make the task a success.

In their opinion Technology Day is important for them because they get to experience what the school has to offer and that their talent is recognised. Pupils mentioned that they chose Music because they enjoy learning and expressing their feelings in music and would like to carry this skill into the future.

Ready, Steady, Cook

There are two food technology classes and they are both taking part in Ready Steady Cook. Their task is to make a main course out of set ingredients and think of original ideas without the help of recipes. We asked a few people why they chose food for their options and they told us that they like coming up with different designs and the achievement they felt after completing a dish.

What is your task? We have to make a main course out of set ingredients and make original ideas. To make a meal out of a randomly assigned list of ingredients. Make a meal from one of a few recipe lists that were randomly distributed.
Do you think this will help you in the future?      Yes. Yes, I want to be a chef.  It will give us skills, especially making it all up on the spot.
What do you get out of Technology Day? It helps develop skills. It’s just fun. A lot this year it is because it involves the GCSE options.
Are you enjoying the activity? Yes. Yes, I am. It’s better than normal lessons. Yes, I like cooking; you get to eat it afterwards.
What do you think you will get from this experience? Cooking skills. Not much. We’ll get experience, new skills and tasty food!

They also felt that activities day was a good way of learning new skills in a fun and laid back environment.

Emily Galloway said “It makes you be more adventurous with your cooking and preparing.”

Art

The Art group have been busy designing logos for the romantic Shakespeare play ‘Romeo and Juliet’.

They have all found it very interesting especially as this is what they will do when working towards their GCSE next year. They believe that Technology Day is important because our school is a Technology College. They have also been experiencing working towards a brief and working as a team with people they did not know before.

Textiles

We talked to the year 9 Textiles pupils and they told us that their task is to create a summer themed item. We asked them if they think it will benefit them in the future and they all gave a positive response. Holly Stoakes, a textile pupil told us that Technology Day is a fun way to get prepared for the next two years.

These pupils went on an enjoyable trip to Bath a few weeks ago where they visited a fashion museum, to help create ideas for future designs. Everyone seemed eager to get started on today’s Technology Day to show and put their ideas gained from this trip into action.

Construction

The construction pupils were set the task of building a bird house.

They where given four pieces of wood and were trusted with hammers.

"Technology Day is very important. I chose to do construction for an option because I enjoy that subject." - Oliver Gellett
"I also think Technology Day is important. I am enjoying myself and have gained more woodwork skills." - Alex Bush

Graphics / Drama

These two subjects are working together this year to design and advertise a tissue box, which will be filmed by the camera crew.

Graphics pupils were to design a tissue box using Inkscape. They were enjoying this task and thought it is a good experience for them next year, as Inkscape is a popular programme for projects set in graphics, so knowing how to use it gives the pupils a big advantage for next year. Pupils have also learnt to work with new people and to cooperate to each other to get their ideas across to make a new unique design.

The job of the Drama group was to create an advertisement for the tissue boxes being designed by the Graphics team. They also worked with the video team to film their advertisements.

Morgan Young and Stephanie Ayling said that it would be quite useful in the future, using props and getting more experience. They have grown in confidence today and had a chance to work with new people.

Sugarcraft

The second food technology group spent their day sugar crafting! Their brief was to design and create a decorated cake for a special occasion such as a birthday. They all found it very interesting and fun because they got to use different techniques which will help them as they embark on the GCSE course. They learnt how to pipe icing onto a cake and how to make various decorations.

“I enjoy Technology Day as it teaches us valuable life skills.” - Hayley Short (9F)

Media

Media team

The year 9 and 8’s of the Media Team are responsible for the design, organisation and stories for the newspaper of technology day. They split into groups and covered either Year 7, 8 or 9 activities, acting as reporters to get views and information on the different subjects from teachers, pupils and visitors running and taking part in the activities.

Photography Team

The year 9 Photography Team took on a role that didn’t take as much courage but was no less important. They covered the activities with their cameras to take the pictures for this newspaper. It isn’t as easy as you might think, with the pupils having to get to grips with the different pieces of equipment and getting the right shots in.

Video Team

The Video pupils were set the task to film an advertisement for a tissue box that the Drama pupils had made a piece about. They have been busy getting used to the equipment ready for their task.

Connor Smith (a Video pupil) said that he thinks Technology Day is fun, challenging and very enjoyable.
