Boat Building

7D were building bridges in teams during period 1.

We interviewed one group who said that they were enjoying their task and it was good to have a break from the normal timetable. Jake Stoneman said that the activity was very enjoyable and quite easy. They said that they were working well as a team. Mrs Duance agreed with this! She thinks that the activity is providing the pupils with a challenge. Their skill with team based activities is allowing them to finish the challenge.

"Technology Day is a very good idea because it allows pupils to try their hand at activities that they would not normally get to try." - Colin Webb (8E)

Cathy Keane was one of the visitors from BAE Systems that assisted the pupils with Bridge Building. She commented on how enthusiastic and inventive the pupils were. She also said that it was definitely worth the time and she would come again for another Technology Day. The pupils were thinking about new problems, which made her think on the spot. She claimed that she learns every year and each time she visits it’s always different

Airboat Challenge
Jess Western of 7L said that she liked the activity and that it was better than a normal school day because she prefers the more practical lessons despite the fact that she burnt her finger with a soldering iron! She said that she had understood most of the activities set today and she would like to take part in another technology day next year.
A pupil from 7N said that it was a very exciting challenge because they had to work out how to make the boat on their own, with only brief instructions. The tools that they used included the soldering iron and the glue gun. A visitor said that it was definitely worth taking the time to come to Springfield School. He said that the pupils were very friendly and were listening well. He was happy to see that there are children with all sorts of abilities here. He explained to us that this was something new to him and he concluded by saying that he hopes to visit this school again.

Maths Challenge

While we were browsing some of the activities in the Maths Roadshow, we came across Alex Warwick and Joe Robinson. They said that they had found Technology Day fun. Their favourite task was making the air boat. They found technology day better than a normal day of school because the tasks that were set had been more interesting. They found it fairly easy to understand and complete all tasks previously set.

Ann Heal was a visitor supervising the pupils taking part in these activities. When we asked her how the pupils were doing, she replied by saying that she thinks that today the pupils realised how good they are at maths but thought that they gave up a bit easily at times! She finished by saying that she would love to visit again.

The pupils of tutor groups 7S, 7P, and 7R took part in a Maths Roadshow in period 1. They were attempting to solve maths related puzzles including a domino roadmap where you match up both ends of the domino with the one drawn on the sheet

Danielle Tucker said that she would struggle if the activity wasn’t explained to her fully. Kyran Becaus says that Technology Day was quite enjoyable based on what he had done so far. Miss Searle said that the year 7 pupils were enjoying the challenge and they were having a good day.
