New Life In Inclusion Support

The Inclusion Support department was buzzing with a different kind of energy after the Easter break, the department was filled with the gentle cheep-cheep of new arrivals thanks to the ‘Living Egg’ project, a unique 10-day chick hatching experience.

The project offered students a front-row seat to the wonders of the natural world. Watching the journey from a quiet, incubated egg to a flickering sign of life was nothing short of magical. The highlight, of course, was witnessing the hatching itself, a rare and special moment that left both students and staff in awe of the effort it takes for a tiny chick to enter the world.

The experience sparked curiosity, with students learning more about the science of the life cycle. They learned about:

  • Incubation: Understanding the precise environment needed for growth

  • The Hatch: Observing the 'pipping' process and the chicks' first moments

  • Welfare: Mastering the responsibility of feeding and watering

The Inclusion Support team ensured that the project was as safe as it was educational. The eggs were Pathogen Free, sourced from a DEFRA-approved hatchery with the highest bio-security rating. This guaranteed the health and welfare of both the birds and our school community, allowing students to focus on learning and handling the chicks while following strict hygiene guidelines.

A project this special required a dedicated crew. Our official ‘Chick Leads,’ Miss Miveld and Miss Larter, oversaw the daily care of our feathered friends. They were expertly supported by Mrs Goodship, whose previous experience with chickens ensured our new residents had the best possible start in life.

Miss Miveld commented "Watching the students engage so gently with the chicks was a highlight of the term. It brought a real sense of calm and wonder to the department."

While it was hard to say goodbye, we are thrilled to announce that all our chicks have now moved on to their ‘forever homes.’ We are especially pleased that three of the chicks have been adopted by a member of our own staff, meaning we might even get some 'chick-progress' updates as they grow into hens!

The ‘Living Egg’ project has been a remarkable success, proving that some of the best learning happens when you are part of a living, breathing story.
