HMS SulSTEMic Trip

On 10 June, a group of Year 7 pupils took part in naval base HMS Sultan's annual STEM activity day, 'HMS SulSTEMic'. Kindly organised by the Royal Navy, the day allowed us to rotate through ten different activities, run by the Navy or by companies associated with defence. This included rocket launching, making an effective water filter as a survival technique, flying drones and landing them for points, connecting electronic cars, driving remote controlled mini submarines through hoops and making boats out of foil. One Springfield group was also able to explore inside the helicopters, As part of the process, we were able to hear from a range of people about their jobs and career paths. Days like this are so important for pupils to gain hands-on experiences allowing them to use critical thinking and apply theoretical knowledge practically, and also inspire them to consider a future STEM career. Although the unseasonable weather could have been kinder, Year 7s still had a wonderful day and we are grateful for the opportunity.
