NFU Visit

On Monday, 08 June we were delighted to welcome back Phil Veltom from the National Farmers Union to speak to our Year 7 pupils. Farmer Phil discussed various aspects of his role on a family farm, and took us through the stages of growing oilseed rape. He managed to fit six Year 7s in a 1m square quadrant and then explained that 50 seeds would be planted in it, leading to about 250ml of oil. Pupils were keen to volunteer to  take part, although one young man may have regretted his keenness when he was "baled" and wrapped neck to toe in plastic! Phil also brought in a sheaf of wheat and a bucket of cow dung!

At the end of the talk, Year 7 pupils heard about the diverse range of careers in farming and food production, including in genetics, robotics, journalism, veterinary, law and logistics as well as farming.

Year 7 pupils thoroughly enjoyed the talk and we are very grateful to Phil for taking time to visit as well as the NFU for arranging the visit.
