Springfield Sings the 80s

The hype of the recent Eurovision song contest bore no comparison to the excitement and anticipation in the build up to our ‘Springfield Sings the 80s’ Year 7 competition which took place in the main hall on Friday, 22 May. 

The first Year 7 Springfield Sings competition took place in May 2019 and these events have been a highlight on the school calendar ever since, giving the pupils an opportunity to work together as a tutor group to prepare and present a class song on stage to their year group, staff and in front of esteemed judges. Pupils rose to the challenge with energy and enthusiasm, working hard in Music lessons to improve their vocal technique as well as learn about vocal warm-ups and the health benefits of singing.

The audience was entertained with a variety of 1980’s song performances, including 'Livin’ on a Prayer', 'Walking on Sunshine' and 'Total Eclipse of the Heart'. After each tutor group had sung their song, they received praise and constructive feedback from the judges, Ms Spivey (Headteacher), Mr Waites (Chief Financial and Operating Officer), Mr Cook (Member - The De Curci Trust). 

While the judges were out deciding on who would get the chance to sing again in a 3-group sing-off to compete for the first place, pupils were treated to more 1980’s songs performed by GCSE Music pupils Evie (10L) and Emma (10L), who had also run the sound tech for the competition, ably assisted by fellow GCSE Music pupil, Lillia (10L).

Thank you to all pupils and staff who assisted, congratulations to the winning groups, and well done to everyone who took part in the competition. The judges, who were able to relate first hand to many of the songs presented, commented that it was probably the best one so far!

The final results and winning songs were:

1st place - 7L  ('Don’t Stop Believing')

2nd place - 7N  ('Man in the Mirror')

3rd place - 7P ('Africa')
