Clemtech Careers Trip
Clemtech, a company that recruits for engineering sectors including rail and maritime, kindly hosted a group of Year 9 Springfield students on Tuesday, 13 October for a workplace experience day. Sam introduced the day and explained the three pillars of engineering: concept/design, build and maintain. We began by looking at the different levels within engineering and the range of salaries available. In the morning, the focus was on railways. Students were made aware of the vast range of jobs available within the railway sector and watched clips of those undertaking an apprenticeship. They also took part in a practical task of designing their own weight-bearing tower, using limited materials.
After a break, during which students enjoyed the pool table, we moved on to maritime and looked at the significance of this sector to the Solent economy as well as the work of an apprentice at Sunseekers. Year 9s worked in teams to make a foil boat that could bear a load. At the end of the day, Sam shared tips on writing a CV and how to stand out to an employer. This was an enjoyable and very useful experience for the students. We are grateful to Clemtech for putting on such a brilliant day and to the Solent Careers Hub for helping us make the connection.
